Instead of having to wait until you are close up to another dog, you could see from a distance that the dog in question needs a bit of space, and doesn't want to play...

Sorry if I'm late to the party, but I've never heard of this before!

So if your dog is nervous around other dogs, or people for that matter, simply attach a yellow ribbon to your dog's lead to let people know.
